The only one I know for sure is that it definitely won't work if you continue a saved game and have already recruited any of them.
Some one reported that Madora and Jahan didn't change stats when they continued their saved game, so it seems it's possible for the changes to Madora and Jahan to not occur on a saved game.
However so far no one has reported any problems if you start a new game.
