Now, I know how that sounded and I can back that not only with words but also proof but I first want someone to tell me if I am missing something and not getting the big picture because it's rather difficult to play through the entire game in order to get a proper opinion.

P.S. I just love turn based games so that's why I am asking.
The short answers it that different people have different priorities. What seems a deal-breaker to you might be nothing more than a minor inconvenience to others, and vice versa. This was apparently the case with game critics, and if the sales of this game are any indications, quite a number of people do like the game despite its flaws.

I get what Filtiarn is trying to say. Unfortunately, like any game forum, you are going to get shouted down by myopic fans of the game.

Part of the problem is that you can smell how close they got to a great game. It's kind of like a gymnast that does the routine with the higher difficulty factor than the other competitors. DOS does some great moves but makes a few errors here and there. The crowd love DOS because it has dared to reach above the average competitor.

Looking at the RPG's on metacritic rated above it you see Great games - Baldurs Gate, BG2, neverwinter nights, etc. Games rated close to like Diablo 2, fallout 2, the witcher 2- these are really good games - but they have done some things better than DOS and you could def say in relation to Diablo, these games are more limited. They haven't tried to do too much.

So an argument could be made that in trying to do more Larian have left a few un-polished bits.

But like the gymnast you just kind of cringe and face plant sometimes because you know it could have been great if those bits were polished.

I found it odd as well - the game has its charms but it's nowhere near what many make it out to be.

Dialogue/story are both pretty mediocre/cliche RPG and fairly lackluster with the one redeeming quality being good humor scattered here and there.

Combat is very imbalanced, the AI needs work, and character building leaves a lot to be desired. UI all around has obvious problems and really dampens the experience.

There are a fair number of other smaller but still irritating issues with its design that add up to significantly weigh the gameplay down as well.

I think maybe it's just been awhile since a decent turn based RPG like this came out, so people were looking for it to be good and more forgiving or willing to overlook the problems or something.

Even as I say all this, right now D:OS is all I have to play while waiting for Pillars of Eternity. And it's playable enough to sink a decent number of hours into, even if as I do so I'm grumbling to myself in my head about the many problems marring the gameplay.
