Just throwing this out there... But
DirectX v9.0 is out, upgrading this is always a good idea (unless it ends up killing your box <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/suspicion.gif" alt="" /> ). Sorry I couldn't help with more immediate problems, I've never run into this problem or even heard of it before now. This thread here has some stuff on what you may be experiencing ->
