Spoilers for later in the game, so don't click this if early on;
I just went around the desert area of Luculla forest, and from the lookout point saw the lava area, the entire place got added to my map since it was visible from there, even if I hadn't set a step in it at all yet.
Pretty sure the same effect is in place in these instances.
