We should not prevent new posters from posting messages or links.
We SHOULD limit people who have just registered from making more than 1 new thread an hour.

Be aware that SFS will give false positives (anyone using Tor for example will be blocked, since SFS lists Tor IP addresses) unless limited to email addresses.

Limiting the number of posts a new user can make and placing posts from new users with an "excessive" number of links into a moderation queue should cut back on spam without too much impact on new members.

The best option would be to allow (senior) forum members to label posts as spam with posts being removed/hidden globally if labeled by enough members.

i think mods do a fine job, they cant prevent morons from getting on forums, but they def do clean up fast...just lately i started noticing these dam spams for pills/movies/ect some different crap...why do they come to gaming forums...!_! wtf is wrong with them...
Devs remove it fast, i seen them do it multiple times already and within an hour its cleared and gone...we arnt on our own, its just that their staff is on vacation and i dont blame them, they put so much work into this game, that it leaves few hands on board....

Isn't there an option during banning to destroy all threads and posts of the poster? (I know there is on all forums I mod, not that I ever use them there, just too low-ground for spambots)
Should save you from bashing the delete button too hard.

Forum administrators can delete accounts and optionally take out all posts; moderators can not.

They don't care what kind of forum it is, the bots just look for high activity. As long as it's an active board, then they'll come flying in. Sometimes they'll even hit inactive ones, but generally speaking they're tuned to the more active ones (theoretically, at least).

Captchas are also somewhat effective against spambots.

Off hand I can't think of many people who may want to volunteer who have been around awhile, are generally helpful and have not gotten involved in any flame wars (even if they were 'right'). Arguing is fine, but if I make someone a moderator it would convey some official endorsement and their posts would reflect on Larian, so they could need to remain mostly professional (I'm not claiming to be perfect in that regard myself).

I thought about PM'ing this, but, nah!, I want everyone to read this...!

Your statement here shows exactly why you've made such a fine moderator as Larian's web go-to-guy. I've seen your work and corresponded with you in more than one forum and when I say that Larian needs to hold an awards ceremony and pin a big, fat, shiny medal on your chest--that's not hyperbole...;) You're the most professional moderator/company representative I've ever seen operate in any forum anywhere. You answer every question you see to the best of your ability, simply and succinctly, even though you may have answered it a thousand times already. You don't talk down to *anyone*, I've noticed, even if it's obvious they only found out last week the difference between a computer mouse and a rodent. You don't evade questions by pretending to misunderstand them.

In short, you are consummately professional and a true credit not only to the company you work for, but also to Larian's customers, whom you serve with unfeigned humility and alacrity. Even when you are dealing with pure-tee idiots, as I saw you were (and I was, too) in another forum over the last couple of days, you manage to hold your cool and retain your professionalism. (Maybe you think nobody notices that kind of thing? I wanted to post this so that you'd know better, in case you have any doubts. Hell, nobody is "perfect," that's not important--what's important is how you treat your employer's customers, and you pretty much stand alone there, my friend--amid a sea of debauched and carelessly sarcastic "forum moderators"...;))

It's sort of amazing when I think about it, but I've been gaming regularly for nearly 30 years now (my joints are starting to creak) but when it comes to remembering helpful people in the industry...you're it, guy!...;) I remember your handle "Raze", I remember that you work for Larian, and I remember even your face--"The guy with horns protruding from his spiked golden head"...;) Most other forum moderators are by comparison faceless and far less than memorable.

[I could say, "Don't let this utter praise swell your head!" but for some reason I doubt you've ever ballooned the ol' cranium over much of anything..;)]

Most moderators in various forums are either ego-maniacs and/or narcissists obsessed with exercising "the ban" against everyone who asks even a grammatically incorrect question. Or they act as censors "protecting" the public from what they think are posts unfit for public consumption, usually because they personally disagree with the opinion in the post, etc. ad infinitum. In short...

They can search high and low, far and wide, and I doubt they will ever find another moderator as competent as you have been--not just for Larian's customers, but your value in showing other moderators "How it ought to be done" seems inestimable. So, get some sleep! You deserve it!

I'm never wrong about anything, and so if you see an error in any of my posts you will know immediately that I did not write it...;)
