Well the wolves turned out tiny too, so most likely any creature I swap in will be much smaller than normal:

Since I'm not trying to make a mod about slaughtering evil puppies/pony sized cows/etc I guess I'll try trolls. Give them a palette swap and call them ogrims.

Yep, I'm definitely on to something.

This has several implications.
1) The RootTemplate used for the replacement has an effect upon the NPC's disposition towards the party (Ally, Neutral, Enemy). This is likely what caused Boreas to not act like an ally for my other mod. At the very least, this is what caused the Script to not function in my earlier post- by replacing a neutral Template with an Orc (hostile), the intro battle was summoned.

2) Globals *can* be replaced in the Main Campaign. Before we've just been replacing stuff in the Data/Public folder. This is a change in the Mods/Globals/ folder for the specific level.

Edit:
So I think the next step would be to gather a list of all Spiders and which map/general location of where they reside, so that we can mod them into something else. And perhaps a list of the NPCs we know that are capable of Summoning Spiders.

Ah the troll seems to be a good scale fit replacement:

Still trying to figure how to replace the sound effects. But for now I might release it as an early beta.

EDIT: Okay, published the beta version. Feel free to build on it:

Hi,
So, I was wondering how progress is coming on this mod. Are you still working on developing it MrEsturk, or anyone else for that matter? I really appreciate your work so far as it is what's allowing me to play the game at all, being arachnophobic and all. The only thing that worries me is that the spider portraits will still scare me.

Anyways, thanks so much for your work so far.

You are applying reason to an irrational problem...;) I have a friend, a great, big, hulking friend, who is absolutely terrified of spiders. One Halloween we put a molded black rubber spider about the size of a quarter inside his desk drawer so that when he opened it he would see it immediately. We heard a loud scream from his office, the sounds of books and things landing and breaking on the floor, and rushed in to see what our handiwork had produced. This huge guy was literally curled up in almost a fetal position in the corner of the room, on the floor, gibbering. Yes, gibbering. And crying!

We had no idea his phobia went that deep! We "talked him down" out of his fear for about thirty minutes before he could finally get up off the floor and function again. I took his lighter and burned the rubber spider "to death" right in front of him, it gooped into the trashcan, and that seemed to do the trick. Fifteen minutes later it was as if nothing had happened.

Phobias are completely irrational. Reason & logic are of scant help. But they are pretty rare, too.

I don't like spiders, either, and like you, I like to kill 'em...;) And lately in D:OS my summoned spiders have been helping me a lot, actually.

Interesting topic! Interesting problem. Can't imagine there's really anything a game developer might do--because when it comes to monsters there are probably people like my friend who might react like that to any number of monsters featured in a game.

I'm never wrong about anything, and so if you see an error in any of my posts you will know immediately that I did not write it...;)

I created a quick fix for this: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/32263228/dos/spider_portraits.zip
Extract to the SteamApps\common\Divinity Original Sin\Data\ folder, and all spider portraits should be replaced by trolls.

It actually is quite the problem for me as a gamer and has become more and more of one as graphics have continued to get better and better. There have been games I flat out can't play or games where I can't get past certain parts of a game because of spider enemies. Often I have had to get my brother to get me past those parts.

I don't blame developers at all for including giant spiders or even regular spiders as enemies. I mean, it is logical of them to do so and, yes, it is impossible for devs to account for every fear anyone might have when making their enemies. It has been very nice to discover that not only am I not the only one with this problem but that there are actually people out there who are nice enough to create mods to help people with this kind of problem. Unfortunately, such a solution doesn't really exist for console games.
