I always roleplay. I have a concept for my character when I start and then try and make my decisions based on that. My character for DD is a female survivor called Valleria and she always sides with the lower class.

For example I helped the poor woman in rivertown ruin the merchant rather that the other way around. Playing like that helps draw you into the game world more I think.
