After a dozen or so hours I restarted because I wanted a Ranger instead of Knight. During character creation I set my companion AI to "Free" (Free Spirit?).
Now, when I try to invite Madora, my companion disagrees.
A. I know at some point I will have the option to hire other mercenaries at the End of Time.
B. I also know (after 3 stones?) I get a mirror that can be used to change the AI.
What I don't know is if that is too late. Will I be viable as a trio before I have access to options A and B above.
Your thoughts?
Thanks!

Have your companion stand outside of the inn while you invite Madora. Your companion can't complain if he/she isn't there.

You really don't want the other companions from The End of Time. The pre-made ones that are actually in the game have dialog, background stories, etc. The others are just fillers, little more.
This arguing with myself and losing really bothers me. It's ok and fun for minor stuff, but getting one of the companions is not a minor thing.
If I was you I'd try to reload a prior save. Some people have gotten to the point where they hit [F5] every time they are about to talk to anyone or anything.

Not to mention the couple of times you have to answer a riddle, know the answer and have your companion overrule you with a wrong reply. -_- Eventually I developed the habit of sending my partner off in the woods while I did the talking. Next game I'll be sure to not choose any AI.

Just unlink and talk to her alone. Alas, whenever you don't want to play RPS, i'd recommend you keep the other character away. I'd also recommend to have a charisma set of equipment so you can win against yourself the easier way.
The point that Larian missed is that it's fun to have a second person participating in all important decisions. But it's rather annoying when you're playing alone. And if the game has a single-player option, it should have taken that into account.
I found the mechanic of RPS pretty nice. You can even abuse it to win a lot, provided you have at least 3-4 dots for every win. The computer never uses the same thing as you (in 3 simultaneous playthroughs I have never come into a draw with the computer controlling the other character's choices).

Doh! Your'e right, Gotcha. I'll do that.
Then, after I get access to the mirror I can change my companion's AI.
I agree, LeBurns. I wanted the randomness of the conversation decisions. It's kind of fun to see what happens. But in this case, having a party of 3 instead of 4 could be problematic.
Apparently, the Cain mercenary is favored by some. I may stroke my beard over that option.

Madora and Jahan are interesting because of their lines, but honestly i don't like either. They do have their reasons to be the way they are, but Madora's constant craziness gets stale fast and Jahan is a 30 year old emo.
I only got them to do their story sidequests, i much prefer the Lvl 1 companions because you can tailor them to be whatever you want.

Some people have gotten to the point where they hit [F5] every time they are about to talk to anyone or anything. I'm doing that since around '87 and never regretted it. Just... back then we had to manully save. For games like these it was never different. I also do not like Jahan and Madora much, both are a bit bland and do not really bring something interesting to the table (like... an actual character). They are better than nothing but I surely hope for the addition of more interesting NPCs to accompany you later (either from Larian or from mods). Anyone remembers all those cool Baldurs Gate 2 NPCs modders made "back then"? I just hope the same happens for DOS.

The game is playable with two Source hunters so there is no reason why it should be unplayable with team of three.
Likewise, if randomness of dialogue battles bothers you and you find out you cannot accept some decision not going your precise way once in a while - dont complain about the feature being there.
Just choose different starting options when YOU start the game. Its your own fault. Not the games.

If your first character doesn't have an AI personality then you can just select the other character while talking and hiring companions.

I mean come on, Minsc had a Space Hamster for trying out loud! Course my favorite was Alora from BG1, just too bad you got her so late in game, but she had the best lines and character. In fact thinking about the BG1&2 companions and those in this game just makes me sad. No inter-party fighting, no romance, etc. Oh, well.

Yeah, thanks Hiver. Great advice.... Just ignore Hiver and his misplaced judgemental attitude. Are you saying the original companions in BG2 were boring? Apart from Nalia "I'm the needy one now!" de'Arnise ofcourse. She really rubbed me the wrong way. Well, hopefully something Larian can keep in mind when making their next game.
