So, last night I finished the main quest, the final boss dropped some sweet loot and rewarded me with a gazillion xp points but, much to my surprise, after credits rolled I got sent to the main menu. So, I click continue thinking I'm getting a post-ending load so that I can pick up that sweet loot and finish sidequests but instead I am loaded to a quicksave mid final bossfight. In disbelief, I kill it again just to find myself staring at the main menu again, unable to keep playing after the final bossfight.
Is there really no post-ending gameplay? Then why the final boss loot and XP?
Thanks in advance.

Not the first game I've seen drop loot at game end. Some devs are just wicked that way.
Maybe if some DLC are added there will be additional places to go after beating the MQ.

No, you can not continue playing after the end of the game.
Perhaps it was easier to leave the XP and loot in than make a special exception for the final boss, or it was thought the lack of them would have been more out of place than having them.

That's a cute development choice. -.-
Larian basically gave us the coolest sandbox ever, but by 7:59 PM we get notified we can only play on it until 8:00 PM, right after being teased about how cool things might get by 9:00 PM. Suffice to say I am not particularly happy with this. Who cares, though, right?
Still, I really hope this changes in a future patch. Post-endgame gameplay is a must for sandbox RPGs.

I don't think it will be changed in a patch. Since the kickstarter Larian has said that you wouldn't be able to continue playing after the end of the game.

I see. That's kinda disappointing.
In any case, would you know if Larian has plans of developing expansions for D:OS?

I don't think it's meant as a tease - bosses as a default give a big XP bundle and drop (usually) 4 high-quality items, and it would take special scripting to make that not happen on the last one. Larian probably didn't have time to worry about that with everything else they were working to finish before release.
It wouldn't surprise me if there's an expansion (especially given how the sales look), but I wouldn't count on it also following Roderick and Scarlet. Their story is pretty much done by the end of the campaign.

In general, yes, expansions are possible, as long as there is demand; specifically, AFAIK nothing has been decided yet about what Larian is going to do next.

Even though they made it clear right from the outset that the end would be The End, I'm still kinda disappointed. I like being able to wander around and explore and make my own choice when to finish, even if it's just spending five minutes wandering about and metaphorically saying goodbye to the place I spent so many hours.
At least the post-ending bit was quite nicely done, though.

I too was disappointed. I had a few buggy quests that never closed and figure I would go back and try to figure out ways to close them after the end but I reached the end before I realize it was the actual end and well the game ended - To be honest I had a save near the end and could have gone back at that point but I decided there were too many bugs and I would wait for the next patch and then see if I coudl finish some of the buggy quests alas there has been no patch in quite sometime (which I guess was sort of expected since everyone went on vacation).

The game makes it quite clear when you cross the point of no return. (It was clear for me at least.) So people could easily make a savegame at that point and stroll around the world at their leasure.
Having games like Skyrim continue after the main quest is over, it makes sense. Stuff respawns. But in D:OS, what else is left to do? Enemies do not respawn. So you can only wander about, doing nothing basically.

Yeah, you can always load a previous quicksave to finish off sidequests or anything else you wanna do before you're done with the game. Still, I don't quite see what the issue would be for the gameworld to still be accessible after the final bossfight. The idea of being able to free roam or leave some stuff to do for after the final boss just fits with the whole sandbox idea. So much so that it didn't even cross my mind I wouldn't be able to do just that.

There would need to be extra dialogue in order to have people react to the fact that you finished the main quest, etc.

Yeah, but that would be very little work, especially considering that just a few npcs actually knew what the main quest really was.

I've give my eye teeth right now for just 30 seconds between the final two fights. First guy drops loots, plus I need to heal up, but no, right into the final.

Just remembered, posting on another thread, that there were a few goblin camps I forgot to wildfire into battering ram into explode into fireball into meteor strike. Guess I'll have to reload that pre-final bossfight save after all. I just wish I could do it wearing the shiny legendary helm dropped by the final boss. =/

Still, I really hope this changes in a future patch. Post-endgame gameplay is a must for sandbox RPGs. This is not a sandbox RPG? Old storybased games like Baldur's Gate, IceWind Dale Planescape Torment... hell even Knights of the Old Republic or Dragon Age: Origins say the game is done when it's done. I never saw anyone complain about that then, and it's still not a bad decision now... I know action-RPG's, sandboxes and stuff are common now so people might expect that the MQ is just a part of the bigger picture like in The Elder Scrolls, but it's really not the case here.

I certainly complained about DA:O ending at the time. :p And I know that Bethesda's decision to open up FO3 with the Broken Steel add-on was somewhat controversial, but I'm glad they did it. I guess I just don't like endings, even when they're well done. On the other hand, Oblivion was a bit of an anti-climax in that the only recognition that something had happened was the occasional "Champion of Cyrodiil? Whatevs, now get out of my face."

Old-school for me is the old 8-bit games where you played until you got pwned (yeah, I'm one of the old farts who played Pong when it was still new: I hated it, though not as much as the parents whose TVs got burn-in!) I'm glad things have moved on, but I'd still like my games to be open-ended.
