There had been a lot of talk how DOS is influenced by Utlima 7; but something in this game reminds me more of Ultima 8 especially in the dark places; for example the sounds that the rift teleporter does is the same of teleporter used in Ultima 8; there are also few references for Utlima 8. I don't recall all the references but there were moments of "Aha! Ultima 8!".

Somewhere in the Phantom forest there's a tree which shows texts; one of them is a modified quote from Ultima 8's starting screen: "you have been a thorn in my side for far too long avatar, Your two worlds will be crushed. Britannia first, then Earth. I shall parade you before their conquered peoples as the fallen idol of a pathetic ideal. I banish you to the world of Rivellion. No one here knows of the Avatar!".
