You can check out Evelyn's house, just west of the clinic (she should have left a bag behind when she fled, containing the key). That will give you some stuff to do just past where you met Dietmar (his quest log entry mentioning Evelyn's diary, even if you have not found it yet, shouldn't cause any problems). I don't know if that will help trigger anything with Esmeralda, though.
