This pops up every time I start the game and tells me "you will not be able to play this mod in multiplayer". Meaning I can't play multiplayer anymore and I don't know why. Tried following every tip for fixing general bugs I could find, since it seems no one else has had this problem. Any suggestions?

Did you check out the editor?

Delete the contents of the '..\SteamApps\common\Divinity - Original Sin\Data\Mods' folder (or similarly for the GOG version), as well as any test mods in the My Documents folder '..\Documents\Larian Studios\Divinity Original Sin\Mods'.

That error can also be caused by a missing configuration file. Try starting the game directly from the '..\SteamApps\common\Divinity - Original Sin\Shipping\EoCApp.exe' program file by right clicking and running as administrator. Then change some sound or graphics settings, exit and restart. If that helps, you should be able to re-start the game through Steam again without the error.

I'll give it a shot, thanks.

EDIT: Nope. "The files of mod 'Main' and/or it's dependencies are invalid. This can be caused by corrupt or changed files. You won't be able to play this mod in multiplayer." This is going to drive me nuts.

For the Steam version, did you try verifying local files? In the Steam library, right click on Divinity Original Sin and select Properties, switch to the Local Files tab and then click on the 'Verify Integrity of Game Cache...' button.

Try browsing to the '..\Documents\Larian Studios' folder and renaming the 'Divinity Original Sin' subfolder.
This folder contains the saved games, configuration files and a level cache folder. Deleting or renaming it will get the game to recreate it on startup; playing the game from a different Windows user account would effectively do the same thing.
After that, start D:OS and see if you get the same error. If not, create a new profile, exit and then move/copy your saves from the renamed folder into the newly created profile's savegames folder.
If you still get the error, exit, delete the new My Documents D:OS folder and rename the original back again.

Still got the error. I've tried everything above as well as completely reinstalling the game, but nothing's changed. Main module still corrupt.

When you uninstalled the game, did you make sure there was nothing left in the install folder that could have been carried over into the new install?

Check out the '..\Divinity - Original Sin\Data\Public' folder, as well as '..\Data\Editor\Mods'. You can delete anything in the Mods folder, and anything related to any test levels you made in the editor in the Public folder.

Some things got left behind, it looks like. Would it be safe to backup the profile and try deleting everything to do with the game, then placing the profile back in when it's re-installed?
Edit: To clarify, large sections of the data and shipping folders are still there, as well as everything from the folder in Documents.

Other edit: I'm surprised you're actually taking the time to help me with this for so long, most people would have given up, said screw it, and moved on by now. Even if by some stupid reason I just can't get it to work, thank you for your help so far

It is normal that the My Documents D:OS folder remains. You can just leave it as-is, or rename/move the folder, and the game will recreate it the next time it is started, and prompt you to create a new profile. In the latter case, once you get the game working, you could either delete the new D:OS folder and rename the original folder back again, or just move the saves from the old profile's savegames folder to the new one.

If you've uninstalled the game, it would be safe to delete the install folder (or just any remaining contents), maybe reboot and shut down all non-essential programs, and then re-install the game.
It would probably be easiest to leave the The My Documents folder as it is, and just try to rename/move it if the clean re-install doesn't get rid of the error.

I removed everything from the steam folder and I'm doing a fresh install of the game. I'll edit this post again when it finishes and I try again.

EDIT NUMBER FINALLY: After who knows how many months, I don't have the error and can continue co-op shenanigans with my friend. Thank you so much for your help with all this. Glad I finally came on here and asked.
