Hi, I love D:OS, I think it's one of the best, least depressing RPG I have played in a long time. It is complex, yet it's keeps things simple and that's why it's way better than every single AAA RPG I have played in the last 5 years.
That being said, there is a way the next RPG could be amazing using the same and overall mechanics. Imagine you had the same overall gameplay but expand the world to a pirate archipelago. Adding to the party of people, you could be in command of a ship to travel between Islands ŕ la ''Sid Meier's Pirates''. Many games have tried this kind of gameplay in the last years but none succeeded. Probably because they were all aiming for far too complex and boring 3rd person ARPG. With very underwhelming results. The D:OS engine could provide the right setting for making this possible and enjoyable without too much headache.
Instead of zombies, Trolls, or any other fantasy monsters, there would be pirates, Voodoo incantations, undead, but also faction soldiers, naval combat and storms.
Like Pirates of the Carribeans in it's days, each island could be made of a city, outskirts, jungles, caves, pirate lairs and beaches. The gameplay could include the core of D:OS, and add to it ship management and shipyard, crew management, trade, contraband, and so on.
Keeping the D:OS core, this would produce an amazing CRPG. A mix of D:OS, Sid Meier's pirates and, with a little imagination, maybe even Monkey island (hello inventory puzzles). D:OS already got the looks and the feel, only the content is missing.
