You checked / changed the sound volume in the options? Try deleting the sound.cfg file in the '..\Divine Divinity\Run' install folder, to reset the sound volume to default.
Try right clicking on the div.exe file in that same folder, select Properties, switch to the Compatibility tab, and if it isn't already, set it to run as administrator and/or in Win9x compatibility mode, or something.
You could try re-installing the patch, if applicable, or do a clean re-install of the game (and patch it is isn't already updated to 1.0034A): copy/zip your saves to another location first, just in case (
7-Zip's .7z format can achieve much better compression than zip, in cases like this where there can be a lot of similar or duplicate data in different files), then uninstall the game, reboot, shut down all non-essential programs (like anti-virus), make sure there is nothing left in the install folder except the savegames folder, and then re-install the game (and patch, if applicable). The DVD version is already updated to the latest for the retail release; the CD version may or may not be, depending on when it was produced.
