I'm a bit of a klepto when it comes to games like this, in FO3/Skyrim etc. I generally pick up everything that isn't nailed down for selling later.
Is it worth doing that for this game? Only just started, and wondering whether I pick up all the shells on the beach for selling.
Also, if I decide to avoid collecting all the junk, is there anything I should be picking that may appear to be junk but actually isn't, or is worth something? e.g. In Fallout 3 there were vendors that paid handsomely for things like old cameras, pre-war books etc. Stuff that looks like junk, basically.

Yes, it is worth doing. You have a pretty good carrying capacity and the things you want to buy are pretty expensive. But a lot of the stuff you'll pick up is crafting components, which may or may not sit in your inventory forever, depending on how much you like crafting.

Steal everything that is not nailed down. However i can think of one thing in a certain encounter in a certain area that you may not want to pick up, ever or right away. If i said more its a spoiler.

But everything you find can be sold a single gold piece adds up if you do it enough.

Getting rich is quite easy.
Be sure you invest points to Bartering. Items are powerful, better items makes better heroes. Barter is most powerful skill to make your party strong.
Put some points to charisma helps too.

Choose few traders who restock money after level up. Give them few items for rise up attraction to 100. Hortun, Captain in the harbour, Both Smiths in the Silverglen, Teller of Secrets are fine.

The game economy works nice up to level 8, later things go wild.
Once you have barter level 5 and attraction 100. You can swap items for free.
I have reached more than half milion gold in the end.
I wish I could hire Captain Jack, buy a luxury yacht and couple of whores. laugh

"I wish I could hire Captain Jack, buy a luxury yacht and couple of whores".
and a good chef/wine steward/bartender.

Thats the other game not released yet....Decadence:Original sin.

Heck I wish that in real life....LMAO. Nice.

Wow Barter 5 or 6 and high Charisma and a great attitude really brings prices way way down, 5000 for a stat or skill book at Teller of secrets. I never had anything in Barter until I edited my characters this playthrough.

The only downside is then your character used needed combat skill points to improve the gear, which in a few levels will be obsolete or un-competitive. As you said it is an economy though, you kill more, find more, steal more and repeat the process, I love it.

By picking up only the things I can sell for 50 (and all pieces of equipment), I have all the gold I need to buy the best stuff.

There are definitely some useless skills like weapon specialization. But barter, charisma and loremaster are very powerful. They dont rip directly the enemy apart, but gives you indirect advantage with similar result. laugh Barter skill and Hortun vendor is the best way to get unstoppable party. Well, the final battle could be quite pathetic then. That creature fallen in 3th turn, in front of my heroes. Party members was barely scratched.

Yep, I found a complain in a serious web-game official review that teller of secrets book are expensive. That poor guy. Books are cheap like hell. Book have a value of 2 common weapons found in random fight. 5k gold you can make from 4 wood pices. Buy them for 5gold, rip by axe, combine and sell staff for 1500 each. Best bussines ever. I bought about 25 pairs of these lovely skill books.

Bought weapons are not as good as self-crafted anyway. Weapon skills are not useless to the Tank.

Yes you can accumulate lots of money if you use the right skills to improve junk items and sell them.

Yeah I buy a lot of those books as well.
