Please read carefully, and do not skim.

D:OS won't launch for me. This is new. I have 80 hours on record using the same PC and the same OS.

Problem:

D:OS will not launch from either .exe or steam.

Symptom:

Sometimes a fullscreen black window opens and immediately (within 0.5 seconds of hitting the exe) crashes. No splash window, !!!NO intro, NO logo!!!, just click>window>crash. Sometimes the fullscreen black window doesn't even appear (click>crash).

Solutions attempted:

  • Uninstalled and reinstalled all redistributables packaged with D:OS.
  • Uninstalled and reinstalled all redistributables manually.
  • Verified integrity of game cache
  • attempted multiple native resolutions
  • renamed splash logo video
  • Ran as admin
  • drivers/steam/etc are up to date

System info:
Win7x64/i5/GTX 770 (2Gb)/12Gb

firewall is off by default, do not use AV

game and steam are installed on E:\ drive, OS is on C:\ (perhaps this is an issue)

if needed, can send .dmp files and dxdiag

Incidental info:
Had the exact same issue with Way of The Samurai 4 (exact same symptoms) worked with their tech support, and they were unable to solve it.

--I won't be on to test any solutions until after 10 Aug 15, but if anyone has run into this exact problem in the latest build, please post some solutions, I'll give them a try.

Having Steam and/or the game installed on a different drive should not be a problem.

Did the crashes with D:OS and Way of The Samurai 4 start at the same time? Or did you only install the other game after you started having a problem with D:OS?

Try browsing to the '..\Documents\Larian Studios' folder and renaming the 'Divinity Original Sin' subfolder.
This folder contains the saved games, configuration files and a level cache folder. Deleting or renaming it will get the game to recreate it on startup; playing the game from a different Windows user account would effectively do the same thing.

If applicable, first disable cloud support, either globally (in the client click on the Steam menu and select Settings, and then Cloud) or just for this game (in the library right click Divinity: Original Sin and select Properties, then switch to the Updates tab and check the Steam Cloud section).

Next, see if you can start D:OS. If so, create a new profile (with cloud support enabled, Steam would just sync to the online version of the profile), and maybe double check that you can start a new game and save/load. If that is fine, exit and then copy a couple saves from the renamed folder into the newly created profile's savegames folder. If that lets you load the saves, move the rest of the saves over.
If that doesn't work either, delete the new My Documents D:OS folder and rename the original back again.

Try deleting (or moving/renaming) the d3dcompiler_43.dll file in both the 'C:\Windows\system32' and 'C:\Windows\SysWOW64' folders, then reinstall DirectX 9c and reboot. If that doesn't help, try copying the dll file into your '..\steamapps\common\Divinity - Original Sin\Shipping' folder.

Try checking your system files:
- click Start, type cmd into the search box, right click the program and run as administrator
- type the following command and hit Enter
sfc /scannow
- when that is done, type exit and hit Enter, then reboot your computer.

Try a clean reinstall of the most recent video drivers (guide). Try checking for Windows and driver updates in general.

The order of events went as follows:

1) Installed D:OS several months ago. Had issues initially launching the game, however I was able to resolve them, though I don't remember the exact solution nor the exact symptoms. Played the game and enjoyed it for quite some time, eventually put it down, though never uninstalled it.

2)Some months later, bought WOTS4 and encountered the problem outlined above. Never was able to resolve the issue.

3) About a week later, updated D:OS (due to my ISP's rather draconian data limits, I don't generally update games unless I intend to play them soon) and tried to launch it, encountering the problem outlined above.

I'm not sure if any of that was helpful to you, but I hope so.

At any rate, I'll try everything you outlined and update with news. Thanks again for helping me troubleshoot this.

This did the trick for me, AND got WOTS4 working. You're an ace raze. You should charge them for outsourcing their problem to you.

I especially appreciated that you didn't simply respond to my bug report with a question (like *cough* some other guys), but gave me a set of possible things to try. Thanks again!
