If I kill Richard, is there a way to tell David this, so he knows he is safe?

Not that I recall. You would actually be better off suggesting to David a couple times that you were going to turn him in, until he runs away. That way...

Thanks Raze. That's the option I used, but later I wondered whether it was possible to kill Richard and let David know he wasn't in danger any more. I've never actually killed Richard, so was just curious.

Killing Richard can get you another stat point from a mindread. After turning all the goblin hearts in you find in Broken Valley, talk to Richard about his next quest, and refuse to help, then head to Jackson's farm and side with the Seekers, and after killing Richard, mindread Lomax in that conversation (not available after if you miss it then).
