As far as I can tell, henchmen are stuck leveling up the slow way. I haven't tested to see what happens when you gain a level with them in your party, but otherwise I can't seem to get them to gain any sort of bonus XP at all.
Companions however immediately match your exact experience level if they are below it, whenever they rejoin the party.
