I have not tried to run any other dx9 games. Off the top of my head im not sure what to try. All the dx9 files are present in that folder. I have reinstalled all dx files a few times to see if that fixed things.

Here is the event viewer log for eocapp.exe

I have renamed the D:OS sub folder in the Larian folder already but will try it again with cloud disabled and check the graphics file.

After renaming The sub folder in the Larian folder the game launches with the same problem. Straight to black screen with mouse cursor movement. Only way out is ctrl+alt+del and restarting or signing out. When I go back into the larian folder it has created a new D:OS sub folder with just the graphicssettings.isx file and nothing else.

Try editing the graphicSettings.lsx file to set the game to run in a window, or download the replacement My Documents D:OS folder to try (see above).

Check your firewall settings; a couple people with Dragon Commander (using an earlier version of the same game engine) had a black screen on startup with just the game's mouse cursor shown due to firewalls.

Error code c0000005 is a memory access violation, but there can be a variety of different causes.

Try checking your system files:
- press WinKey-X and select Command Prompt (Admin). Alternately, click Start, type cmd into the search box, right click the program and run as administrator.
- type the following command and hit Enter
sfc /scannow
When that is done, type exit and hit Enter, then reboot your computer.

ran the sfc/scannow...no problems. Already used the replacement D:OS folder you provided earlier. The game launches a small window but immediately starts not responding and has to be closed. Turned firewalls and antivirus off and same result. Looking like I may have to occupy my self with Shadowrun until the ehanced edition is released so I can get back to it.

thank you for your help

Note that D:OS saved games will not be compatible with the Enhanced Edition (the EE uses a different My Documents folder for profiles and configuration files). There were too many changes to quests, the skill system, etc.

Ok, I have the exact same propblem here. Windows 8.1, 2600K, 7990 GPU.

Never played the game until trying today and...nothing. Just black screen, cursor and nothing happens.

I have tried the replacement D:OS folder in My Docs, no go. I have tried changing my screen res, no go.

In the Event Viewer, I am given the following:

EoCApp.exe
1.0.252.0
1114
01d0e95d391222a2
17
F:\Steam\steamapps\common\Divinity - Original Sin\Shipping\EoCApp.exe

With the replacement D:OS folder, did it at least switch to trying to open in a window, rather than getting a black screen?

Did you go through the rest of the suggestions?

Yeah, with the windowed version, it would just open a white window. Nothing would happen afterwards.

I can see on the process list that it uses up about 191mb of RAM, windowed, but in fullscreen it eats about 153mb. That's essentially the only difference I can get out of them.

I've verified the files via steam and it turned up nothing.

Backed up the Steam files, deleted all data and restored. Nothing.

Downloaded the VC++ 12 Update 4 which I saw mentioned, nothing.

Is there a tool I can run that is going to give me some more specific informaiton?

It is the (32 bit) 2008 VC redistributables that the game uses (as well as DotNet 3.5 and DiretcX 9c, in the '..\SteamApps\common\Divinity - Original Sin\_CommonRedist' folder).

The D:OS Analysis Tool (for the PC version) will do a quick check for the minimum requirements, and if you create a report, will collect system and game information (and would include your saved games, if there were any). You can email this to supportdos@larian.com, with a brief description, though it may not be useful in this case (verifying files didn't help, you meet the requirements and, if you went through the other suggestions above, updated drivers, etc).

Did you try starting the game as administrator?

Try renaming the ..\Documents\Larian Studios\Divinity Original Sin\graphicSettings.lsx file, and see if the game will recreate it on startup (that may have been what caused the crash, but running as administrator may help).

Do you have an unusually high desktop resolution, or odd refresh rate, etc?

At first i tried to rename the graphicSettings.lsx file as u said.
And it crashed on startup.
Then i tried to delete just the other folders that u uploaded and keep only ur graphicSettings.lsx.
The game started and created all the new user folders but again i tried to enter in the video option and the game crashed.
So I renamed again the graphicSettings.lsx file and the game started without problems and finally i can go to the video options.
I have no idea what happened but now is working.

At the beggining with all your files (user folder and graphicSettings.lsx file) i could start the game only in window mode or fakefullscreen now is working on normal fullscreen too.
EDIT: my laptop has a resolution of 1366x768 and normal refresh rate.

Im gonna go necro on this thread because ive tried every solution here and its still not working, its literally press button into instant Divinity has stopped working, no other game has this problem in my massive games list and its kinda annoying at this point that i paid for a game that has so many problems just getting it to work.

There are some additional things to check for the Enhanced Edition of the game.

Do you have Windows 7 with SP1 installed, or later (64 bit)?

Does your graphics card have hardware support for DirectX 11?
One way to check which card you have is to click Start (or WinKey-R), type in dxdiag and hit Enter, then in the window that opens, switch to the Display tab.
Also in that tab, check the 'DDI Version' in the Drivers section on the right; it should be 11 or higher. If it is less than 11, still check the video card specs, since there are driver issues and some programs that can result in the DDI Version being lower than what it should be. In that case, a clean re-install of the drivers may help. If possible, check your monitor/laptop manufacturer's site for an updated inf file, especially if a monitor is just listed in Windows as a generic PNP monitor (that is often the case for laptops).
It is also possible for the DDI Version to be listed higher than the actual hardware support. For example, Intel's integrated graphics drivers can cover an entire family of GPUs and will report one number, even if they include chips with different levels of DirectX support. Intel HD 2000 and 3000, for example, only support 10.1.

If you are playing on a laptop with dual graphics, make sure the game is loading on the discrete graphics (nvidia or AMD) rather than integrated (Intel, though HD 4000 and later should have DiretcX 11 support).

Try verifying local files: in the Steam library, right click on Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition and select Properties, switch to the Local Files tab and then click on the 'Verify Integrity of Game Cache...' button.
With the GOG version, in the (optional) Galaxy client, select Divinity: Original Sin Enhanced Edition in the left column, then click on the More button, and in the Manage menu select 'Verify / Repair'.

Try manually installing the support packages (from the folder ..\SteamApps\common\Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition\_CommonRedist) and reboot. There is a similar folder in the GOG install folder, as well.

If you check the Event Viewer, does that give an error code or 'Faulting Module' file name that might help identify the cause of the crash?
- click Start (or WinKey-R or WinKey-W in Win 8), then type "event viewer" into the search box. in Windows 10, 'event' should bring up 'View event logs'.
- after starting the Event Viewer, expand 'Windows Logs' in the left column and select 'Application'
- in the center column, look for a recent error (maybe sort by Date and Time) for the game
- check the information under the 'General' tab below the list of events, starting with "Faulting application name..."

If that doesn't help, there is an updated version of the Analysis Tool for the Enhanced Edition of D:OS, which you can use and email the resulting report.zip file to supportdos@larian.com.

Extract the zip file somewhere and run the AnalysisTool.exe. When that loads, browse to the install folder (if it is not automatically detected), optionally run the tests first, and then generate a report (it will be saved in the same location as the Analysis Tool).

The report will contain system and game information (and would contain your saved games, if you had been able to get that far).

Did you try re-installing the MS VC redistributable, as above?

Check the DDI Version listed in the Display tab of dxdiag for your graphics card. Is it 11 or higher?

Check the Event Viewer to see if there are more details on the second error, such as which file can not be read, etc.

Tried repairing the redistributable included, did nothing.

DDI is 10.1 with all the newest graphic drivers and updates, no idea how to fix that. Card is Radeon R9 280.

Event viewer gives this: Windows cannot access the file for one of the following reasons: there is a problem with the network connection, the disk that the file is stored on, or the storage drivers installed on this computer; or the disk is missing. Windows closed the program Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition because of this error.

The interesting thing is it gives the same message for the "AMD Settings" program, which crashes on every boot. Reinstalling doesn't work on that either.

Verifying game cache in Steam states that a file is missing and will be acquired, but that doesn't work and it gives the same answer all the time (also for some other games that work fine).

Tried mostly everything else in all the threads, no luck. Also, the game apparently crashes before making a folder in documents, as there is none.

And you have Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 installed, or later?

Try uninstalling the AMD Settings program.

A clean re-install of the latest graphics drivers may fix the DDI Version being reported lower than it should be. This can also be caused by system or video monitoring or overclocking programs. If possible, check your monitor/laptop manufacturer's site for an updated inf file, especially if a monitor is just listed in Windows as a generic PNP monitor (that is often the case for laptops).
