No, I don't think that would be worth it. You'd get more use out of another mage group. You will probably not be doing a great deal of moving as a mage, that the extra 20% would help (you'll get movement boosts from Speed and possibly equipment, etc).
Staves are two handed weapons, but after the beginning of the game, you shouldn't be using melee attacks very often.
