I had sound problems all of the time. I have a Creative Soundblaster 5.1 with the latest drivers and still had crackling and stammering sound. I fixed them this way.....
Start -> Run
type dxdiag
Go to the sound tab
Move the sound acceleration slider down. I had to move mine to the second tick mark.
