so, we cleared out the cove -- there's a room w/a locked door + a painting which reveals a switch that lets you go down a trapdoor to fight the pirate.

we never found a way thru the locked door, so we left it for later + ended up coming back eventually w/the thief + lvl 5 lockpicking.
that door led to headless nick's zombie body on a ship.

anyway, how were we supposed to get thru door -- was there a key somewhere?

Depending on the difficulty level, the harbour cove gate key could have been on a bench (IIRC) to the right of the gate, or past the gate (so you have to use Telekinesis, the teleporter pyramids or a teleport spell to get it).

Pontius drops a key for a different gate.

oh yeah there was a key sitting there on the other side -- that was for the door??
