Did you try left clicking and holding to move the characters (in the direction of the mouse cursor) as well as clicking on the ground (to move to that spot), possibly after using WASD or the arrow keys to move the camera focus away from the characters (the Home hotkey will recenter it on the lead character)? There is a setting in the options to allow moving the camera by hitting the edges of the screen with the mouse cursor, as well.
