Does co-op work the same as in the first game where the 2nd (and 3rd and 4th, I guess) player controls the host's party members?

Or can each player (2nd, 3rd, 4th) have their own characters and single player campaign progress, but join the 1st player's game using one of those characters?

In the first game my friend wasn't interested because if he joined my game he made no progress and he is not interested in not "making his own progress".

The party all make progress together (which was the case in the first game as well; I don't think your friend knows how games work).

However, each origin story has its own quest that's unique to them and not visible to other players in their journals.

Well, when you think about it, if you weren't the host of the co-op game, you could basically only play the game when your friend was playing. Kind of like console Minecraft "servers". You may progress while you're playing, but that progress is saved to your friend's save file, which you can't access.

I'm not sure that's what the OP was saying, but even if you're not hosting, you can still save the game to your local machine and continue from it in single-player if your partner is a super lame-o pants and doesn't want to play :p

Thanks for the replies.

I understand that in the first game everyone "makes progress" as a party and there is story progression. However, the 2nd player is simply "possessing" one of the team members of the host's team. As soon as the game session ends, the 2nd player basically has nothing.

Now the difference (and what I'm trying to figure out), is like in other multiplayer games (ARPGs like Diablo, or MMOs like WOW), where everyone has his / her own characters and progress towards the overall campaign, but can join others and complete quests / campaign.

My friend doesn't think he'll enjoy turn -based combat, so the only way he would get into this, is if we co-op, but he wants to know that his own characters are progressing (so he isn't interested in just playing Robin to my Batman (in a Batman game)...not sure if that makes sense...

The party makes progress together ... kind of... Each character has their own quest log and you can actually get quests on one character that do not show up on others even on single player. (Theres a left and right button on the quest log window above portraits) The caveat to that of course is plot triggers those seem to be global.

This can also get confusing because if you talk to a quest NPC one one character you can progress/bug it for another. For example the grieving mother quest you can mix up the dialogue by talking to her with separate characters missing the trigger you got from another NPC conversation that would allow you to near instant complete it

This also leaves room for exploits as I was able to do the free potion quest on all 4 of my characters on SP. I could also repeat failed influence checks by switching characters.

Character creation only happens at the start. After that, you can only play an existing party member.

Haven't gotten around to co-op mode on this one, did a lot of it on D:OS 1 though.
