I had the same problem (also not playing explorer mode). I thought "explorer mode" was supposed to be easy? The difficulty on the classic mode is brutal at the beginning when you have no armour and are often facing mobs significantly above your level.
Once you have some decent armour, the difficulty definitely starts feeling much more reasonable.
