To be fair, there were lizards way back in Divine Divinity! Indeed they were one of the races represented by the Council of Seven, whereas some others weren't, such as goblins and, er, the undead. Though controversially I'm not entirely convinced that the undead strictly speaking count as an actual distinct race.
