I feel that the default edge panning mode (off) is too restrictive and the edge panning on mode is too chaotic.

What I'd like, and what some other 3d apps do, is when you hold the middle mouse button and scroll the cursor to the edge of the screen it will pan a little extra in the distance then rubberband back when letting go.

That way you can quickly and easily peak in the distance without things going haywire. I often want to do that.

Note this should not affect middle mouse screen rotation, which is good as is. Right now nothing happens when you put the cursor to the edge with the middle mouse button pressed.

(Also I've never played the original, so don't know if this was already in there and just hasn't been added in yet for the Alpha.)

Why do you think that the edge panning mode is "chaotic"? It pretty much just moves the camera. If you can't control the speed just reduce it in the settings. It's basically direct input which is imo always the best and most precise solution.

I think the OP's issue is that it's easy to inadvertently scroll while you're trying to do something else. Increasing the scroll delay a bit would help.
