We just figured out what's going wrong with the latest patch and have created an updated version of the patch which we released this evening.
The official announcement will come on monday, but if you go now to the support section and download the patch which is marked as v1.33 you will in fact be downloading v1.34 which solves the black map/resetted world problem. The following applies:
If you apply the updated patch and load savegames made prior to v1.33 you will encounter no more problems.
If you had loaded savegames made with v1.33 after starting a new game with v1.33 you will also not encounter any problems.
If you have made a savegame in versions before v1.33, then loaded that savegame in v1.33 and saved in v1.33, that savegame is potentially corrupt. The best thing is to revert to one of the savegames made earlier with v1.32 or before.
We're really sorry about any inconveniences/frustration caused by this but are happy that we could solve it relatively quickly. Thank you to all of you who sent in your savegames and helped us locate the bug.

Yes, it affected all versions. Everybody who got v1.33 should get v1.34 before continuing unless they started from scracth with v1.33 (and even then, it's not a bad idea to get v1.34)

If you have Windows XP/2000, make sure you install the 1.34 patch from an account with administrative rights (as with all installs). If you do not have full read/right access to the Divinity folders, some files can not be updated, and the patch does not currently give an error message in that case.

I'm sorry that I have to be the one to brake the bad news but, with 1.34, which I installed this morning, there are small squares of black that do not clear off the map, even when I stand right on top of the spots.. I was having the dissappearing map problem w/ 1.33. I can deal with this much better, if it's the only thing wrong...

This is the fog-of-war, single blocks? Did you re-load a save from v1.32 or before? If you start a new game, do you still get this problem?
Try deleting all of the files in the '..\Divine Divinity\Run\Dynamic' folder. This folder is used as a cache for the game. Files are created / copied there from the save game folder when you load, and written / copied from that folder when you save a game. The files will be re-created as required the next time you start Divinity. If there was a corrupt file in that folder, deleting the files should fix the problem.

This is a new game that I started after i installed1.34. Yah its the fog of war, just the small squares and only on the large map(Ferol).

The only place where I have seen those blacked-out spots is in Ars-Magicana on the back-side of Geoff's house/shop. I did go and delete the files in \Divine Divinity\Run\Dynamic' folder and they are still there.. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif" alt="" />

Well I have been playing with 1.34 for about 15hrs straight just about. I've seen no problems...(except for the small one from earlier) but that's very easy to live with compared to before!...............Thanks alot guys! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

I figured out another bug. You can't minimise the details anymore. The fog works, but the shadows and the detail level don't work anymore. I know, it's not that important, but I want to post it anyway <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif" alt="" />

i had to jump back to an oldsave game to continue on, and so far the problm fix is working well - - however instead of a black map (because i honestly haven' explored the dark forest yet) the whole entire map was revealed - although eveything was normal i could just see eveything.

Does this patch fix the savegames that are already bad? I started with 1.33 and all my savegames are 1.33. I downloaded 1.34 and still have black maps (they occur when I teleport back to Rivertown from Verdistis). Do I have to go back through my savegames till I find one that doesn't have the problem and restart from that point?

the patch will not fix black maps , unless you have a previous save that you haven't touched since before installing the patch, i tried putting my savegame in a different folder, uninstall, reboot, scan, defrg, then reinstall, move saves back to folder and try again...but, it didn't work! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/disagree.gif" alt="" /> So I decided with all my new knowledge from these forums, to start all over again with a new game, and it's even better than the first time! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/winkwink.gif" alt="" /> more options, different ideas, I'm just <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/sad.gif" alt="" /> that it's gonna take so long to get where i was before (all teleporters except imp, and rounding up the posse counsil members) But hey...it's just a game <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif" alt="" /> and a damn great one worth every hour spent on it...oh gotta go impale some giant blue orcs <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/stupid.gif" alt="" />

If you install: PLEASE, check you have Admin rights (Win XP, 2000) and no background programs are running then (Antivir, Firewall, Internet etc.). I'm overcautious: If you have saves from an older version, back them up in a separate folder, please. Kiya

Hey, kiya i can't have backgrounds programs running when i play divinity? Maybe that's the solution for my crashs, but i have other problem, only when i go to get out from iona's dungeon (2 or 5 min later) the game always crash and i have to restart, and that just happens when i cast any spell, just later from iona's dungeon, i start to cast spell and 2 or 5min later the game always crash and i have to restart, because that i don't played divinity anymore and before in the first and the second installation this never happens, but i'll try something i thinking now. If you have another solution...

So, I'm kinda confused.
I picked up this game about two weeks ago, got it patched up, and started a game. Then I saw that a few days later a new patch came out, which I downloaded. (It says that it's 1.033A on my title screen)
Now, today I had the blackened map issue when I went through a portal, but I didn't save it because I caught it. Reloaded, and everything seems to be okay, again.
Will the latest patch fix this for me? Or since I played with the original patch (which I guess was a "fix" not really a patch), then patched to the second patch, am I going to have to be super careful about this happening again. I actually think that I skipped out on 1.033 all together, because I seem to recall the download only being 10 megs, but I'm not for sure. Man, please don't tell me I'm gonna have to restart from scratch!!! Is my save game permanently corrupt, and regardless I can't fix it now? Can I avoid the black screen problem by avoiding the transporters (GROAN!). Or do I actually have the correct patch (1.033A) and the problem is still occurring?

Ugh. I just installed the patch again and, sure enough, 1.0034a. Does this mean I'm already buggered even if the map is fine for the time being? Or will the patch keep it from going black as long as it hasn't already gone? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/memad.gif" alt="" />
One more question: Is there a cheat for map reveal? If it's a choice between starting over, and just knowing where everything is, I'll take knowing where everything is... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Now I have just seen your note that this link takes you to the 10.2meg v1.34 patch. Guess it was not made clear or I just can't read take your pick, that even though it says its the 1.33 patch its really the 1.34. I did start with version 1.33 and have just downloaded 1.34 will this mess up my saves or do I need to start from scratch? I know you folks said that this link for 1.33 would take you to 1.34 but for some reason I thought you meant something else entirely "DOH"! To be on the safe side I will do as Kiya suggested, and uninstall DD backup my saves and then run defrag for good measure. Then do clean install and add the 1.34 patch.

Ok i've just ran into this bug with ver. 1.033A. I hope the patch i download is newer than that. Anyway problem i have is not really the map, the whole area (both Verdistis and Arx Magicana areas) have RESET completely. So the map is not only black, but all items back,doors closed etc etc. Now my issue is, i bought a house in Verdistis and placed all my stuff in a chest there, went to Dark Forest came back and area has reset, with the chest gone and the house still like it was when the merchant still owned it. So i lost all my items.....hope the patch fix this?
Anyway everything was fine until i visited the Dark Forest and returned to the other 2 areas.

There was a 1.033A version that was 10 MB as well last week. I downloaded this latest one, it's -exactly- the same size but it shows up as 1.034A in my game....Either way it does -not- fix my map and area reset problem. Below is my situation and i don't think any patch can fix it, somewhere the game did not save the world data and i doubt any patch can magically bring it back, UNLESS they can write a hotfix that checks what quests i've done or my status and unlocks areas which i might've visited by that time i.e. Council area and maybe replacing quest breaker items. OR just reset the areas completely without the mobs (only quest mobs), so i can just go and do the quests again i.e. kill the Sucubus again to unlock that area.
I played through Riventown, then went to Verdistis done everything there, then went to the Council area, THEN went for the first time to the Dark Forest area. I basically stayed there doing all possible quests and thus all my savegames are mainly while i'm in that area. Now when i return to any other other areas (council,riventown,verdistis) it's reset. Council area is locked, i can't enter the scrying room.
I unninstalled the game, re-installed, then installed patch 1.34 (1.034A in other words) copied my old savegames back and loaded. Problem is still there. I looked into my savegame files and as there's Shroud and World files missing. It's as if while i was in Dark Forest and save it never saved the status of any other area i visited.
All my savegames are -before- i returned to any other area from Dark Forest, thus it's not like i returned to say Verdistis opened up some map again and saved. BUT if i do so now, these missing shroud, world etc files reappear. So it is saving the "new" and -wrong- status of the areas instead.
So now, is this anything the patch -can- actually fix or am i totally stuffed now? Main problem is the council area at this stage, i can get the missing items back via all these hotfixes around here, but not sure if i will run into something else later.....

i did and now i am stuck because the doors of the counsil of 7 are closed. will the patch solve this problem? or is there another solution? I don't want to start all over again and do quests till i'm lvl 37 again

I have a question:
Does this issue potentially affect the ability to get via conversation the quests for the Dwarfs and the Elves?
I noticed that the axe is present in the village, and I am unable to proceed to the lower levels of the dwarven mines. Also, the way to the orc camp beyond the elven burial grounds is blocked. I have the quest item: solve problems between elves and dwarfs, which is gotten from the Elven maiden whom the character apparently takes as a love interest via conversation. however, none of the elves or dwarfs have requested that i resolve their dilemmas.
Another thing I find odd: When you go to the secret temple behind the church with the 3 sacred items to create the holy weapon, usually there is a hotspot in one of the hexagons that activates the statue so that you can converse with it and choose to keep the sword the dagger or the amulet. however this hotspot seems to have disappeared.
Also of note, I left one pyramid in Rivertown mercantile area, and the other in the elven village in Dark Forest. I entered the castle, finished those quests, got kicked out, and when I went to Rivertown, tried to use the pyramid there to go to the elf village, i was informed the pyramids don't work now. I used the teleporters to make my way there, and discovered the one pyramid in the elf village was gone. and upon returning to rivertown, the other one was gone. i know that on another quest, i had one and the character foolishly hands over the pyramid to the imp, hence you lose them for a while. is this a similar situation, or is it part of another bug?
I haven't yet accessed the castle treasure vault via the Rivertown sewers, where one finds Zandalor and watches the 3rd marked one perish. Could this be affecting my ability to get the holy weapon and get the dwarf and elf quests?

ps: are there only 2 cures available for the 3 sick peasants in Dr. Elraths cellar? Whether or not you talk to the 3rd person after giving the 2 cures to the other 2, you don't fail the 3rd "find a cure for X" quest. It remains open ended as though there were another cure. if there is a 3rd cure, where do you find it? the only working magic mirror in the game was used early on to rescue the 2 injured soldiers in Aleroth from death.
