I agree with some of the previous posts, if food stays in the game it should offer a long-term buff.

The benefits of food are too minor for the AP cost and munching down a steak during combat is silly.

Eating, sleeping, and drinking should be encouraged with small long-term benefits. The benefit gained could relate to the quality of food/drink or the comfort of the room/bed.

They could even add a periodical "starving" debuff to emphasize the need of eating.
Like -1 constitution if a char is starving (or a stronger one: -1 cons every hour to a maximum of -3). The debuff goes away if you eat something.. Every food may have a different duration depending on the crafting required (cooked food in this case lasts longer + better buff).
