I would like to dispute your conjecture. If my mage who has 10 strength can consistently hit for 350 damage with Crippling Blow, without flesh sacrifice, with a staff, then a Finesse build that's actually putting points into Scoundrel and Two Handed would certainly still be able to have a good time. Especially if they're playing an elf. In my experience, the damage added by strength on skills and such doesn't matter much, and switching weapons in combat (say, to a bow for Snipe) is totally a valid strategy that's been carried over from the first game. Plus, Tactical Retreat doesn't require a bow, and Battle Stomp, Phoenix Dive and Battering Ram don't even require a melee weapon, so you shouldn't be locked out of any vital skills by using one (barring Crippling Blow). And besides, you could always just switch back to the spear when you feel it's necessary.
