That's not something that is communicated through the game, that's simply a projection and a rationalization you brought to it. If this is the truth of the situation, it needs to be shown.

Another way to look at it is that a lot of magisters were sent out to the swamp and killed. There's what, 10-15 magister corpses and 10 or so magisters that you fight? Plus maybe several magisters died on the ship you came on. Not sure how many came on the second (the one at the end) ship, but that's perhaps 25 less troops than would normally be in the fort, if not more. IMO, the magisters probably deserve more permanent lodging, but it's actually a fairly realistic number of troops given their losses.
On an unrelated note, the final boss fight was a satisfying amount of challenge for classic mode, and it would definitely be very tough on tactician, though I might've been a level 7 vs. level 8s which made it more difficult. Hoping most of the fights are around that toughness in tactician mode.

I would agree, though with a caveat. The fight is only doable for me if I assassinate the Magister Mage who casts Burning Skies BEFORE confronting Alexander. Even then, I usually lose one or two party members to volatile ground effects. It's a difficult encounter, by no means undoable if you manage to quickly kill the mage, but otherwise it's almost like a toss of the dice.
There also seems to be a bug there. If you teleport yourself to the platform where the Mage resides, she won't even register the player if you don't confront Alexander first. You can literally stand in front of her and she won't bat an eye. A bug? Probably.

The void worm thing is also a problem: I've seen a number of people say they've stood back and lolled while it and the Alexander Massiv fight it out, but every time I've played to that point it hasn't appeared until everyone else is dead, at which point it makes its unwelcome entrance. Fortunately it doesn't seem to bring too much pwn with it, but it has more hp than is decent.

Yeah. In the last encounter, I also had a problem where the Worm actually burrowed onto the Mage-inhabited ledge (the one where she doesn't walk, but only looks at) and comes out BELOW the floor, but can still attack anyone (without being attacked itself). Had to move everyone out of there for the worm to burrow back to where it could be damaged. Wish I'd taken a picture.

My experience was kind of funny, where the mage never actually joined the fight until right before the worm was dead, and then it came and delivered the killing blow on it. And yeah, the worm does have a LOT of health compared to anything else, while doing pretty good damage (imo). Still able to wittle it down though. If it had some kind of major group CC ability like a fear, that'd be tough.
