Larian Studios Forums Divinity - Original Sin Divinity - Original Sin - Enhanced Edition Retail Boxed Game As Gift

I got the game from GOG, and have been enjoying it. I want to give the retail boxed game as a gift for Christmas. My question is, what version will the recipient have, after patching - the original or the EE? Is the EE a free upgrade for them, or does it cost?

The only retail copies for the game on PC are Steam, for the original release. When redeeming the Steam key, they would get both D:OS Classic and the Enhanced Edition added to their library.
Steam and GOG versions of the game can play together using Direct Connection or LAN.
