Some great suggestions. Divinity 2 (not to be confused with Divinity Original Sin 2, which seems to be a thing) is a really fun game and will have a similar "feel" to Oblivion since it's broadly the same engine that's being used.

I also agree with the recent Fallouts: in spite of the amount of squabbling about whether FO3 or NV is better and whether FO4 is a worthy successor, all are really good games. Buggy as hell though, so it's definitely worth playing the PC versions for access to unofficial patches and command console access when things get really stuck.

I share the reservations about The Witcher 3 with having to play pre-made characters, but I found I quickly got past that and had a really good time with it. In spite of the hype, I'd still rate it as one of the best games I've played.

Also the Mass Effects (though seriously, quit playing ME3 when you encounter Marauder Shields: the ending truly is as bad as everyone says) and Dragon Ages. They're not without their flaws, but I'm glad I played (slight reservations about DA2: it's not as bad as many people say, but it does feel annoyingly unfinished and gimmicky a lot of the time).

I'd persist with DOS2 though: as much as I found the isometric, turn-based text-heavy retro style a bit much to start with, it soon grew on me. I'm still a rubbish tactician but I still found the games quite absorbing. It was also a handy stepping stone to playing the original Divinity which I'm glad to have finally got around to, though I did occasionally find it heavy going since the Oblivion-style "actually being there" style of gameplay is more to my taste overall.

And I think I'll stay away from the "what's a 'true' RPG" argument since it always generates more heat than light.

J'aime le fromage.
