I haven't played the new patch yet, but the consensus seems pretty clear: the game is way too hard on classic mode for new players, and even for veterans. Further, it seems especially difficult in the first few levels, when the game should be a bit easier, to help people ease into the mechanics.
This was a similar problem with D:OS1, where new players (myself included) often had no idea where to begin and the game was really hard (when really, I just didn't realize you had to go west at the beginning.) This is a recipe for turning off a huge number of players right away. However, I think Larian is aware that the difficulty is a bit out of whack for classic mode, so that should be rectified soon. To me, it's more clear than ever that we need like 5 difficulty modes: Super Easy (easier than current explorer mode), Easy (about current explorer mode, maybe slightly harder), classic (easier than current classic mode), Tactician (slightly harder than current classic mode), Ultra Tactician (brutally difficult) + Hardcore mode can be applied to any of these difficulties.
I also knew that permanent surfaces was going to create a whole host of problems. It adds nothing positive. It's not even immersive, considering that most of the surfaces would naturally fade away.
Finally, people seem to dislike the new economy. My impression is that it's even more punishing in the beginning than it was before since skills are so much more expensive. I thought it was pretty solid before, maybe with a few minor tweaks needed, but not a complete overhaul.
