I like puzzles so perhaps I missed something.

There is no puzzle. It is obvious. Stand on the trap. Take the skull. Walk through the door. Stand on the trap, pick up the skull walk through the door. You only need 2 anyway even if you don't teleport.

There is also no benefit either way between teleporting through the whole maze or picking up skulls.

Attempting to go through the maze backwards (from behind the castle) confuses the Gargoyles and makes the game almost unplayable with the repeated conversation loop.

There is another problem with this area. XP for killing the (level 6) fire skeletons next to the burning guy are too low, but even worse, if Withemere lets you in to Braccus' you'll get rewarded with lots of level 3 epic items. The chest outside gives you level 6.

As all the skeletons inside that area give similar level 3 gear I guess this area was meant to be in a earlier stage of the game?

It is annoying though to end up with crappy stuff after the maze.

I'd suggest making the maze a bit less obvious (so you get the advantage of the stuff through the portals), giving at least some XP for freeing the burning guy and, at least, in Braccus Tomb give something decent.
