The host can press "escape" and select "assign characters" to assign the characters to any players in the game. Have him do this and assign the extra character to you, then you will be able to chain him with your other characters.
Basically, all characters in the party have to be assigned to one of the players. The host can change these assignments at any time. Players can only control and chain together characters assigned to them.
