HI,

I would like to use this thread to discuss using the GM Mode to run tabletop RPG session either via a LAN or Skype.

The idea is to use the GM Mode to do what application like Roll20 or Fantasy Ground do, which is to play tabletop rpg via the internet.

While this approach requires many features already listed under the - D:OS2 GM Mode – Idea thread, it is also slightly different. That's why I think it requires a different thread.

Please post here any thoughts or suggestion about the features you would specifically like to see in GM Mode in order to utilise it to play tabletop RPG.

Ultimately, I would like to utilise OS visual interface and combat system and use a traditional PnP RPG system for anything that has not to do with combat or exploration.

To summarize, these are all the features that have already been requested.

  • Moddable GM mode
  • GM playing monsters
  • Player dedicated servers
  • GMind the main game
  • Add/Remove enemies, traps and such
  • Permadeath/new character option
  • Multiple GMs
  • Dedicated server for persistent modules
  • Connection to a database
  • Chat channels
  • Needs to be 100% stable
  • On the fly conversations
  • Release "when it's done" over delaying the game with it
  • Queue events together or with a timer
  • Player become GM and vice-versa
  • Procedural generation
  • Sessions replay
  • Preplan and save an area
  • Random Encounter chart for the GM
  • Adding personal quest linked to the main campaign
  • Hiding player stats from the GM
  • A dialogue tool for GM

I am happy with all of those but I find that the list is quite geared toward using OSII as a new iteration of NWN or NWN2 (i.e. a video game) persistent worlds.

A couple of additional things that could be required to run a system agnostic OSII mod as a tabletop RPG
- Plenty of way for the DM to highlight area/creatures/draw player attention
- Common chat channel for the party so you can share dice results & macro results.
- Character sheet support & integration
- Modable UI.
- Modable Dice/Roller with ability to drive macro
- A skill system (optional)
- Editable journal for the player character
- VoIP buit-in (show which creature is talking / modify voice pitch)
- Ability for the GM to craft/utilise its own random tables
