I agree as well. It's nice to have them around, especially since animals are also nice conversation partners ... most of the time.
Sadly, animal companions are often lost in my games. It's usually far too late when I realize that I've lost the Black Cat.
I'd certainly like an animal of my choosing on the Lady Vengeance. Choices like these can also make the game feel more personal.
