So I bought the game a couple of days ago and I am strugling to understand the point of the Inquisitor (Larian's preset) because his skills and weapon don't mix up very good...I just can't understand why you would want skills that have save checks vs physical armor when your weapon and class fantasy dictates you want to start chipping away at magical armor.

Is this like a niche tank that only works with Ranger,Enchanter & one more front line dude?

The starting skills are all wrong. IMO, inquisitor is best played as a mix of warfare + aerothurge and maybe pyromancy, focusing mostly on warfare skills that don't have physical checks (like rage, whirlwind, pheonix dive), and aerothurge for ccing.

Your assessment is correct. Larian does not use optimal builds for many of their presets.

The presets are mostly to give a variety of default options so people can get a class "feel" in a classless system.

Players more interested in character performance and combat optimization should customize a base class. Everything is changeable via customization aside from the starting items and weapon.

But still, this is alpha...we have to help Larian make playable presets for companions, don't we?
Right now I am trying to find a better preset than the current Inquisitor spec...and outside of Polymorph with Aerothurge I got nothing I can call fancy that lives up to the name of the class description set up by Larian.

Edit:Well maybe there is Pyro and Warfare...but only if Larian is willing to make e preset that uses the wombo-combo from the starting skills provided by these 2 skill lines.

Well, the idea I had for Inquisitor is the High AP Inquisitor - taking the Warlord Talent and loading up on skills which grant extra AP. Starting Combat Abilities are Warfare and Pyrokinetic, starting Skills are Battering Ram, Haste, and Flaming Daggers. Everything else remains the same, including the Warlord Talent.

At level 2, take a point into Scoundrel and pick up Adrenaline. This helps to make the Inquisitor into more of the Speed Mage which it was in D:OS 1.

This is similar to what I wanted to suggest for the battlemage so that Inquisitor can get Aerothurge and Warfare, the only thing that prevented me to follow up on this ideea is the fact that I don't see for the life of me why a staff wielder would want (more than) 1 point into Warfare seing that the bonus is so useless to them....So I tried a poly and aero combo on a staff wielder and found something very interesting, the skill bull rush actualy gets bonus from Inteligence and the elemental damage from the weapon he is using.

For a preset on Poly and Aero I would go, Ligthing Bolt,Lighting Hand and Bullrush as I feel Chameleon Cloak in place of any of the mentioned Aero skills would make the class to "safe" to play (charge stun/burst down magical armor then disapear at your earliest convenience).

My guess is that the inquisitor is the Gandalf class. Mostly a caster, but uses melee for support; opposite of the battle-mage preset.

All the presets are somehow useless. Skilled player make his own choice. Newbie is clueless on the first level up. I guess 4 classes and button Recomended will be better. Such a button will make points distribution for any level.

Thematically speaking the class should use necromancy and pyromancy. And not be good at any weapon style at all at the start. But since the game is not class based this should be seen only as a starting point.

Not all skills and attributes have to synergize in best possible ways either.

its not like you cannot play the game without that.

On what source is this statement based on?

Yes I agree they should be a guideline,a starting point, but if the presets do not accurately what is their purpose within the game when you start it,then they are pointless. Inquisitor in my eyes is for all intent and purposes what the Fighter preset should have been and vice versa.

Check out my companion preset review series (on going work):

Best advice I can give is this:

Don't try to play inquisitor like a warrior. He's still a spellcaster.
Don't try to use a staff with a warriors mindset. You're still a spellcaster

Edit: Changed to reflect what I actually meant

Maybe once the devs fix the staff + warfare synergy it might work but since half the skills have physical throws you're kinda shooting yourself in the foot trying to go melee.

The advantage if going a staff atm is simply that it has a higher base damage. This means that any skill that scales off of weapon damage is going to have a significant damage increase over 1 or 2 wands.

That said, dual wielding wands does significant damage on auto attacks if you have the right combos so I'm really not sure it's worth it.

Hope this helps

Actualy, Inquisitor worked very well with sword and shield. I had very high physical and magical resistances as well as the ability to dish out high damage to physical armor and access to some very good cc's (criple, knockdown, decaying touch, shakles of pain for zombies to execute milk combo).

Magical weapons are of so little use for the warfare and necromancer combo it's actualy pathetic to even think that there might have been some higher purpose behind this preset. Maybe there was 1 back in the day when Necromancer didn't check vs physical armor, but this is no longer the case.

Feel free to have a go over my companion review series to see how good my results were with studying the Inquisitor preset: http://larian.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=605277#Post605277

In my opinion the Inquisitor is a magic warrior. Maybe change his weapon from a staff to a TwoHanded Sword. For his skill preset , it would be mroe fitting to be something like this : Crippling blow , Ignition , Electric Discharge. The reason is because he should be lethal in close, mid and long range.
I dont think he should get any point into Huntsman and Scoundrel trees, nor into the Ranged weapons tree.
I can see him working with Sword and shield or Wands and staffs too. But the picture i get from the Inquisitor is with a Twohanded sword. Also i think that one of the origin characters should be a inquisitor. Im getting the inquisitor vibe from The Red Prince. A noble , a scholar, a warrior , a general who has comanded armies and well versed in the arts of magic. All in all , this is what i think for the Inquisitor.
Inquisitor
+1 Strenght ; +1 Intelligence ;+1 Constitution
+1 Persuasion
+1 Warfare ; +1 Pyrokenetic; +1 Aerotheurge
Crippling Blow ; Ignition ; Electric Discharge
Far Out Man Talent
