Convinced my room mate to buy early access so we could play together, but for the life of us we can't figure out how to get into the same game together. It must be something obvious that we are missing ...
I feel stupid asking, but does anyone have a link to a step-by-step for the easiest way to have two people in game together? I've tried to direct invite him once I start a multiplayer game, but he gets an error saying my group is full (despite the fact that I'm the only one in the group). The "create" button is greyed out in the server selection area, so I can't make my own server for him to join...
What am I doing wrong?

You need to either invite him at character creation, or invite him when you have more than one party member.
The way multiplayer works is the client is basically joining the host on their save - They don't bring their own character. If they join during character creation, they can make a character then, but joining during an ongoing save means they have to control one of your preexisting party members. If you only have one character at the time they try to join, your group is "full" then (since you're controlling the only available character).

Think I see what you are saying, but how do you have them join during char creation? I don't see a button or a mechanism of any kind that indicates inviting someone...
I must be completely blind if I am the only one having this problem lol.
Edit: Here is my run through from the first menu in the game-
Campaign>Multiplayer>Classic Mode>Begin>
From here I go through making a character. There are no menu buttons or other options to invite anyone. Once I click the "Start Game" button, it says "You have started a multiplayer game, but nobody has joined you yet. Ideally, they should join you while you're in Character Creation. Are you sure you want to start the campaign now."
If you say yes, you start without anyone joining you. If you say no, it kicks you back to character creation but there is still no option to invite anyone else...

Yeah, you want to invite them before you hit start game.
Hit escape and click "Connectivity Menu". If you're doing Direct Connect, you'll get your server ID to give to them there.
If you're doing it through Steam, invite them from your friends list, or have them join through their friends list, or the server browser (server browser is Campaign -> Join Online Game).
You can edit your server's online visibility from Settings -> Gameplay -> Online game visibility, which controls who can see your game (Offline, Invite Only, Friends, Public).

Oh, by the way, you can change your game's multiplayer status through that "Connectivity Menu". Even if you're in a singleplayer game, you can open that up and toggle connections to then make it multiplayer, or vice versa (going from multiplayer to singleplayer without quitting).

That did it- thanks amigo. Really appreciate it. Was getting frustrated not being able to do multiplayer.
I gotta say, hitting Esc at char creation is an unusual and counterintuitive way to bring up a menu screen. I assumed hitting Esc would back me out of character creation. Anyway, thanks again.

No problem. Yeah, that is a bit counter-intuitive. Having a button for the connectivity menu visible in the character creator would definitely help.
