Were you giving the doctor alcohol? If you do that, Dain can not be saved.

Then I have been experiencing a bug since nearly the beginning of EA where I can get 240 xp for giving her alcohol and then casting a healing spell in Dain for an additional 240 xp. I can provide a save game where I get xp for both.
