I have just tried cripple with 2 daggers and yes it does backstab as strange as that may seems and it even backstabs the other enemies in range even if they didn't have their back turned.
It's like cripples carrries the crit or backstab effect from the target to everyone else in the area.
Now would think this is a bug and I would only think specific skills could backstab instead.
