So I'm getting the Warning! The savegame has detected tampering or corruption message when I try to load my save game. I verified the game cache files in Steam, I've tried using a different profile to save and load. Also tried to open my save in MooseEdit but it's not showing up on the left hand window even after I point to the right folders up top. Does anyone have any advice on what to try?

We were dumb when we started the game and did Honor Mode, so when I quicksave, I copy and paste the save to a second folder as a backup should the main get deleted by the game. I'm guessing the copy and paste process messed something up.

My guess is the game might be hosed, but that is extremely disappointing given we're 90 hours in. Thanks and apologies if my forum search missed something obvious.

I can't help but I'll be following. I've gotten save errors in every one of these games I've played although not the same error. It's usually for me, "error writing to disc" but then it saves it as a .tmp file and one can just delete the .tmp and save and it is usually OK. I'm thinking this may be related to your problem somehow.

AWD2;

That error means that at some point when loading the checksum value saved for the data failed to match. Unfortunately, there isn't any way to determine exactly what changed, or if the problem may have been just with that load rather than the save itself. If it is a problem with the save, there is no way to tell if or how serious it may be (a developer build of the game would catch certain types of issues, but may or may be able to identify the exact problem).

If you are playing the Enhanced Edition, MooseEdit was not updated for that (it can only open/edit Classic saves).

Copying the save shouldn't cause a problem. Overwriting the backup shouldn't either, though making new copies each time (perhaps to a folder named for the date, for an end-of-session backup) would be safer and more reliable.

If this affects your backup save, as well, then you can either keep going and hope that if there is a problem it isn't serious, or you can start over in tactician (depending on how far you are into the game).

caninelegion;

Are you shutting down all non-essential programs (especially anti-virus) before starting the game? A real time scan could cause intermittent problems with the save process.

Try exiting out of the Steam client completely, and starting the game directly from the '..\SteamApps\common\Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition\Shipping\EoCApp.exe' program file, by right clicking and running as administrator.

If this happens frequently enough that it is easy to reproduce, try creating a new Windows administrator user account (possibly with the My Documents folder on a different drive, if available), switch to that account and try starting the game from there, directly from the executable.

I appreciate your response, Raze. Unfortunately, whatever happened plagued all of my backups. I cycle through four or so places when I transfer the Honor Mode save and I guess I quick save frequently enough that I went through the cycle without reloading to notice anything has happened. We tried continuing, hoping that it just sort of worked as we kept going, but no matter where we save, it always reloads back to the same spot. We were trying to tackle the Close The Rift quest but our saves always bring us back to us having just completed clearing The Immaculates Temple. I'm sure there's still a chunk of game left to go, but it feels like we're pretty far in.

I don't think we'll start over (playing in co-op), which is a shame since personally this has been one of the best CRPGs I've played. I'd hesitate to start over wondering if something like this could happen again 80 hours into the next play through, but I guess having a meticulous enough system for backing up saves would take care of that. I guess if we give the sequel a shot, I'll know to take the extra care.

Anyway, thanks again for the response. Certainly disappointing but these things happen. Was there ever a save editor for the enhanced edition?

It is possible someone may eventually updated the save editor to handle the EE, but since nobody has done so yet, that seems unlikely.

If loading is always at the same state, there must be something preventing the save process from finishing (and overwriting the previous version).

In the profile's savegames_patch folder, try renaming the HonourMode folder and lsv file within (and optionally the png screenshot file). Next, delete the contents of the LevelCache and Temp folders in the My Documents 'Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition' folder. After that, start the game, load the save, teleport to a different region and try saving and loading.

If that doesn't fix the problem, exit and delete the 'Divinity Original Sin Enhanced Edition' folder in the Larian Studios My Documents folder (or rename it if you have any saves from another playthrough you want to keep).
Next, start the game, create a new profile when prompted, then exit. Copy latest backup of your honour mode save to the new profile's savegames_patch folder, and then use the EE pak extractor (latest version download) to extract the contents of the save (see below), then delete/move the save folder (leaving only the extracted version), start the game, load the uncompressed version, teleport to a different region and see if you can save and load to the new region. As long as you can save I don't see a way after that the game could load to the original location.

After downloading the ExportTool zip, extract it to a folder somewhere appropriate and start the ConverterApp.exe program. Switch to the 'PAK / LSV Tools' tab, in the 'Package path' browse to the 'HonourMode.lsv' file, then for the 'Extraction / source path' browse to that or another profile's savegames_patch folder and enter a new folder for the extracted files (you can copy/paste the path from the path listed above and edit it; ie to be '..\savegames_patch\extracted_save') and click the 'Extract Package' button.

I appreciate you responding again. I went through both options described. They both made it so the game did save in the new location so hopefully that allows us to finish up the game. The error message is still there but maybe that's unavoidable at this point. Again thanks for taking the time to respond.

Yes, once the check fails, a flag is set in the save and it will continue to give the warning each time it is loaded.
