eek, he will have to drop his heavy axes on ground to be able to cast spells How about bringing into game staffs and wands for mighty mages?

Yep, currently thieves have to either act like a mage or like a warrior in fights, and sneaking around is pretty useless since a lot of monsters can detect the thieves hiding in shadows anyway. Dual-wielding, if properly implemented, would definitely make the class a lot more fun to play.
Having ability score requirements for skillpoints would make sense, but the presence of charms make it kind of difficult to control, unlike level restrictions for various skillpoints. But to make the two (special abilities and skillpoints) different, I think it might well work, too.

Why not to remouve "Ranger Sight" in favour of Dual Wielding? As warriors have "Elven Sight (which is twice more effective), a sniping thief may just take the warrior's trait, leaving a slot opened for DW. Of course I might be wrong, and "Elven Sight" is not the same thing as "Ranger Sight" (I am looking in the manual and I won't start the game only because of that: I'll be hooked for another 2 hours and it's midnight here ).

Elven sight is infinitely better than Ranger sight, it's true (twice as good, actually, but I like infinitely the word ). That's a pretty good suggestion, although I'm sure for DD2 all the skills will be revamped and rebalanced.

dual wield seems more of a berserker (no shield)/warrior type skill to me... an assassin would switch quickly between concealable skill-type weapons but i can't imagine an assassin wielding two swords for instance...
my two cents

Right, as it have been already implemented in many games before, I would say dual wield is traditional style for assassin. Imagine shadowy thief using 2 shord swords, daggers or stilettos having ability to apply poisons to his weapons, having backstab and crit strikes in his posession. Nobody will want to meet him at night.

Dual Wield would be great, also for Warriors. I did that in BG2 and the effect was awesome.
I am in blood Stepp'd in so far, that, should I wade no more, Returning were as tedious as go o'er.

maybe like, lvl1 survivor (or assasin) you get the regular special move, at maybe lvl20 you get the special move of 'hiding' without any penalties of being revealed when there is a candle near you ...
that way you could remove the embrace shadows or something else and then add the dual wield
and i don't understand how the survivor can actually backstab a monster in DD
