Mostly people assume back in the old day's only woman are witches, hence the reason Witch=Female.

Yea I can bet that almost 75%+ people imagine witch as dark figure all in black and riding a broom. Only trick is that witch is simply title for someone who uses certain type of skills, no matter are the male or female.
I mean even medical nurses use same term for males who do their jobs, they dont call them doctors. It is same for witch.
