In the very beginning, I click on the ladder, only to effectively disappear and never return or emerge elsewhere. Clicking on the ladder again produces no effect. My character is simply gone. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help.

Is there a special way I'm supposed to click on it or something?
Is your caps lock / num lock key on? Is your desktop set to 16 bit colour? I vaguely recall someone having a problem leaving a cave with the desktop colour depth at 32 bit. If you quick save and then load, does the screen get updated properly?
