I was wondering why it was taking so long to go from level 1 to 2, when I noticed that I had 5 times more experience than was needed for level 2. I decided to keep going and when I got to rainbow waterfall area and climbed the vines to spot with the girl and mother camping and then climbed back down again, I suddenly got the level 2 event where I could assign skill points, etc. But I still had too much experience. Now, no matter what I try, I cannot get the level 3 event to trigger. My chars all say: Current XP = 6000-ish, and only 1950 are required for next level.

So what gives? Do I need to restart or what?

You can find an image for what I am seeing here...

The experience is just accumulated so far. If you want to see how far you are from leveling, look at the yellow bar at the bottom.

"Next Level" means, you still need so much exp to gain that level. It does not mean: "Next Level at xxx exp"

Ok, that makes sense, I guess. Still it is confusing, when other similar games show the experience needed for next level as cumulative as well. In other words, why would one be cumulative and the other not? Seems kind of dumb to me.

Some games do it like this, some do it differently. I pretty much seen all variations already. Every RPG handles it differently.
