Started the game with the Beast and just reached Fort Joy. Picked up Red Prince along the way and just realized i can use him to talk for my party with all the lizard and unique options available to him this way. So what is the benefit aside from making a custom look for choosing a main in the beginning? Also will i be able to pick up custom or hireling like companions or am i forced to use 3 characters out of the 6 origin characters?

Thats the catch, there is no 'main'. You are all the main characters, and you play with the one you feel like playing at the time.

The advantage to making a custom character in the beginning is that you can define your starting skills, talents, stats and tags if you so wish.

Unfortunately this is not true for the origin characters that you pick up on the island, as while you can pick a general role for them, their initial attributes, spells, et cetera are predetermined. This may be purposeful to avoid people min/maxing character combos for a few levels. I am told that you may respect your characters at the beginning of Act 2, so I would assume that's when the difficulty starts to spike.

Your main is you and can't be dismissed. The other party members will leave you if they do not like or agree with your main's decisions .

No custom hirelings. You're the only potential custom character in that you can pick your own talents, class, etc. unlike the origins. But that's about it aside from being able to choose your own name and how you want to look.

But each companion gives you the option when you recruit them to tell them roughly what you want them to do for you. Nothing cosmetic or anything though.

It looks like you are trying to play Divinity. Would you like help?
