Those same text files that you used to edit by hand can now be viewed and overridden via the Stats editor. See http://larian.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=611728#Post611728 for how to get at it (but instead of opening the ItemCombos subsection, go to Stats and then Armor, Weapons, and so on).

You indeed cannot directly edit stats of items in the main game mod (so you can't break/corrupt the main game), but you can override them in your own mod. To do so, right-click on the row with the stats for the item you want to change, and click on "Override in -> name_of_your_mod" (the first time you do that you may get an error about a file not being found; if so, just do it again and it will work).
