If you're playing on Classic, you shouldn't need to power play as I'm suggesting.
Yeah, Fane is a cool concept, just be aware that as he's Undead, he can't heal from normal sources, only healing through poison. Necro can heal him as well (rule of thumb, unless it's a potion or a hydro spell, other sources should heal you, not damage you). But as I said, you're probably playing a party of four, so think well before choosing an Undead, since he might not fit the rest of the team (for example, if you have a dedicated healer, Fane won't be healed by this character).

If you want to have less complexity, you can always pick the Talent "Lone Wolf" that gives enourmous bonuses to characters when there are only one or two people in the party. This way, you can focus on two characters only. I don't recommend doing this on Tactician, though.

Also, I see necromancer as a complementary build. There are spells that deal damage and scales with int, but you're not picking them for the damage, you'd be using them for the effects. Decaying Touch is a good example of this sort of spell, it doesn't really matter how much damage it deals, as long as the target doesn't have physical armor, you're good.
